OUR MISSION
Bitcoin in the Wild is a non-profit organisation utilising Bitcoin to support various wildlife, education, and conservation projects.
Our focus is on showcasing the projects we support while aiming to increase donations and raise awareness. Unique to our approach, we work directly without involving middlemen or organisations.
The Story Behind Our Mission.
Our Story
Our journey began with a deep love for nature and a life-changing encounter with orphaned elephants in South Africa and grew into a mission to support wildlife conservation, education, and community empowerment through our Izindlovu Fund.
What started as a small fundraising effort for HERD, the country’s first elephant orphanage, grew into a broader mission to protect wildlife and support local communities. Over time, we expanded our work to include anti-poaching efforts, environmental education, and innovative initiatives like Bitcoin in the Wild, which uses Bitcoin to fund conservation more efficiently and transparently.
Rooted in compassion and driven by action, we collaborate directly with trusted partners on the ground to ensure that every donation creates lasting impact for wildlife, people, and the planet.

Why Bitcoin
Our founders, Ben and Helen, leverage their deep expertise in economics and finance to stay ahead of global trends. Aware of vulnerabilities in monetary systems – like government corruption, limited banking access, and rising debt since 2008, worsened by COVID-19 and inflation – they believe traditional policies fall short in the digital age.
Bitcoin, as the world’s largest decentralised computing network, offers a promising, globally accessible solution for financial settlements, promoting inclusivity and minimising transaction costs.

Our journey began with a passion for protecting elephants and has evolved into a mission to strengthen wildlife conservation through innovation.
With Bitcoin in the Wild, we use Bitcoin to fund conservation, education, and community projects across South Africa.
We believe that Bitcoin can be beneficial for wildlife and nature conservation if organisations adopt the technology and get financial support from the Bitcoin community.
It is important for Bitcoin’s impact to extend beyond human rights and wellfare considerations to include animals’ protection as well. Therefore, with our experience and knowledge of the Bitcoin ecosystem, we help our projects to embrace Bitcoin.
By embracing Bitcoin donations, you encourage innovation in charitable giving, ensuring sustainable conservation impacts for wildlife worldwide.
Challenges
For Non-Profits.
Donations are vital to non-profits as they rely on public funding to carry out their mission. Moreover, minimal transaction costs and quick acces to funds is essential. While initiatives such as selling merchandise, art and fostering educational programs can be effective for non-profits, they often fall short of covering the significant costs they face. By incorporating Bitcoin into their fundraising efforts, these organisations can enhance their financial resources and make a more impactful difference.
Moreover due to above inflationary developments, people donate less every year which is understandable as individuals are not interested in giving when they struggle to cope themselves.
As the Bitcoin technology is new and not always well understood, education and explanation is needed.
Our Mission
And Strategy.
The Bitcoin in the Wild fundraiser works actively to ensure the long-term sustainability of our projects by holding BTC donations in self-custody.
To actively support South African non-profits in their transition toward Bitcoin, all Bitcoin are accepted as a donation to our organisation, which are hold in our self-custody wallet. We determine, in line with our mission and governance framework, which projects or partners are supported and when funds are allocated. We do not hold bitcoin or any other crypto-assets on behalf of third parties.
-
When partner organisations are able to receive Bitcoin directly, support may be provided in Bitcoin to their designated wallets.
-
Where partners are not operationally ready to receive Bitcoin, allocation decisions are made at a later stage in accordance with our governance framework and aligned with our mission.
Bitcoin contributes not only to the effectiveness of wildlife and nature conservation efforts but also to the overall safety and well-being of the dedicated individuals working in challenging and dangerous environments.
